Addition & subtraction speed test (2 minutes)
A quick timed tool to practise mental addition and subtraction for UK 11+ maths. Choose a digit challenge, press Start, and type your answer in the third row from the units column first (right to left) — the same way most children work carries and borrows on paper.
Building fast recall of addition/subtraction facts and reducing common calculation slips under time.
Aim for accuracy first. If results are strong, move up a digit level. Review wrong answers to spot where place-value or carry/borrow mistakes happen.
Use “little and often” sessions: 2 minutes today, a quick retry tomorrow. Rotate the digit tab based on what the child found hardest.
FAQ
Does it include both addition and subtraction?
Yes. The tool mixes addition and subtraction questions so the child practises both skills.
How should parents interpret the results?
Focus on accuracy and average time for submitted questions. Use the question breakdown to practise specific error patterns instead of repeating the whole set blindly.
Can my child use Skip?
Yes. Skip moves on quickly. It counts as skipped (not attempted) so you can still measure accuracy on the questions the child chose to tackle.
Why type the answer “backwards”?
The first digit you type is the units column, then tens, then hundreds — like working across the sum in columns. That supports mental carry and borrow habits; the answer still shows as a normal number (e.g. 135).
